Understanding the inputs & results

Exchange rate
The price of one currency expressed in terms of another. E.g., 1 USD = 83.5 INR.
Base currency
The currency you are converting from.
Quote currency
The currency you are converting to.
Bid/Ask spread
The difference between the rate a bank buys and sells currency. Banks and remittance services charge a spread as their profit.

The formula

Currency conversion
Converted Amount = Amount × Exchange Rate

Multiply the amount in the base currency by the exchange rate to get the equivalent in the quote currency. For reverse conversion, divide instead.

Worked example

Convert $1,000 USD to INR at rate 1 USD = ₹83.50.
  1. Converted = 1,000 × 83.50 = ₹83,500.
$1,000 = ₹83,500 at ₹83.50/USD.
