ROI Calculator
Use the formula and worked example below to calculate manually.

Overview

The ROI (Return on Investment) calculator measures the gain or loss on an investment relative to its cost, expressed as a percentage. It also calculates the annualised return (CAGR) for multi-year investments.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the initial investment amount (cost).
  2. Enter the final value of the investment (current or exit value).
  3. Enter the holding period in years (for annualised return).
  4. The calculator shows ROI %, total profit/loss, and annualised return (CAGR).

Understanding the inputs & results

Initial investment
The amount invested at the beginning — the cost basis.
Final value
The current or selling price of the investment.
ROI (%)
Return on Investment — net profit divided by cost, expressed as a percentage.
CAGR
Compound Annual Growth Rate — the annualised rate at which the investment grew, assuming compounding.
Net profit
Final value minus initial investment. Can be negative (a loss).

The formula

ROI and CAGR
ROI = (Final − Initial) / Initial × 100 | CAGR = (Final / Initial)^(1/years) − 1

ROI measures total percentage gain. CAGR normalises the return per year, making it comparable across investments of different durations.

Worked example

Invested ₹1,00,000; current value ₹1,80,000 after 4 years.
  1. ROI = (1,80,000 − 1,00,000) / 1,00,000 × 100 = 80%.
  2. CAGR = (1,80,000 / 1,00,000)^(1/4) − 1 = (1.8)^0.25 − 1 ≈ 15.83% p.a.
Total ROI = 80%. Annualised return (CAGR) ≈ 15.83% p.a.

Frequently asked questions

ROI is a backward-looking metric. Past returns do not guarantee future performance. Consult a financial advisor for investment decisions.
