Fuel Cost Calculator
Use the formula and worked example below to calculate manually.
Overview
The fuel cost calculator estimates how much you will spend on fuel for any trip or monthly commute based on the distance, your vehicle's fuel efficiency (mileage), and the current fuel price.
How to use this calculator
- Enter the total distance (in km).
- Enter your vehicle's fuel efficiency (km per litre).
- Enter the current fuel price per litre.
- The calculator shows the total fuel needed and the total cost.
Understanding the inputs & results
Distance
The total one-way or round-trip distance of your journey in kilometres.
Fuel efficiency (mileage)
How many kilometres your vehicle travels per litre of fuel under typical driving conditions.
Fuel price
Current price per litre of petrol, diesel, or CNG at the pump.
Total fuel needed
Distance ÷ Mileage — the litres of fuel required for the journey.
Total fuel cost
Total litres × Fuel price per litre.
The formula
Fuel cost formula
Fuel needed = Distance / Mileage | Fuel cost = Fuel needed × Price per litre
Divide distance by your vehicle's mileage to get litres consumed. Multiply by the fuel price for the total cost.
Worked example
500 km trip, mileage 15 km/L, petrol at ₹105/L.
- Fuel needed = 500 / 15 = 33.33 litres.
- Cost = 33.33 × 105 = ₹3,500.
✓ Fuel cost for 500 km trip ≈ ₹3,500.
