Understanding the inputs & results
Desired take-home
The annual income you want to net after taxes and expenses.
Business expenses
All costs of running your freelance business — tools, internet, co-working space, professional memberships.
Billable hours
The hours per week you can actually bill to clients. Allow for admin, marketing, learning, and non-billable time.
Effective tax rate
The blended rate of all taxes you owe — income tax, advance tax, and any GST you need to set aside.
Minimum hourly rate
The rate below which you cannot sustain your target income and cover expenses.
The formula
Freelance minimum rate
Gross needed = (Take-home + Expenses) / (1 − tax rate) | Hourly rate = Gross needed / Billable hours per year
Work backwards: gross earnings must cover take-home, expenses, and taxes. Dividing by annual billable hours gives the minimum hourly rate.
Worked example
Take-home target ₹15L/year. Expenses ₹3L. Tax 25%. 25 billable hrs/week, 48 weeks.
- Gross needed = (15L + 3L) / (1 − 0.25) = 18L / 0.75 = ₹24L.
- Annual billable hours = 25 × 48 = 1,200.
- Hourly rate = 24,00,000 / 1,200 = ₹2,000/hr.
✓ Minimum hourly rate ≈ ₹2,000. Project rate = hourly × estimated hours.
