BSA Calculator
Calculate Body Surface Area for medical dosing using the Mosteller or DuBois formula.

BSA Calculator
Use the formula and worked example below to calculate manually.
Overview
Body Surface Area (BSA) is used in medicine to calculate drug doses (especially chemotherapy), cardiac index, and burn percentages. This calculator uses the widely used Mosteller and DuBois formulas.
How to use this calculator
- Enter your height (cm) and weight (kg).
- Select the formula to use (Mosteller is recommended for general use).
- The calculator shows your BSA in square metres (m²).
Understanding the inputs & results
BSA
Body Surface Area — the total surface area of the human body, expressed in m².
Mosteller formula
BSA = √(Height × Weight / 3600). Simple and widely used in clinical practice.
DuBois & DuBois formula
BSA = 0.007184 × Height^0.725 × Weight^0.425. The original 1916 formula, still referenced in literature.
The formula
Mosteller formula (recommended)
BSA = √(H × W / 3600)
H = height in cm, W = weight in kg. Result is in m². Alternative: DuBois — BSA = 0.007184 × H^0.725 × W^0.425.
Worked example
Height 170 cm, Weight 65 kg.
- BSA (Mosteller) = √(170 × 65 / 3600) = √(3.069) ≈ 1.752 m².
✓ BSA ≈ 1.75 m² (average adult BSA is 1.7–1.9 m²).
Frequently asked questions
BSA calculations are for medical reference only. Drug dosing must be determined by a qualified healthcare professional. Do not use these values for self-medication.
